Germany, WW I COMMEMORATIVE BADGE for NAVAL ZEPPELIN CREWS with BOX COMMEMORATIVE BADGE for NAVAL ZEPPELIN CREWS with own BOX, Germany. The Navy Commemorative Airship Badge (more popularly termed the Navy Zeppelin Badge) is among the most prized of the flight qualification badges. It is referred to as a commemorative badge because it was introduced in the early 1920's, after the end of WW I. This badge has a number of interesting features. The Navy Zeppelin Badge is identical to the Army Zeppelin Badge, except for the Hohenzollern Crown. The latter appears on the Navy badge, whereas the Army badge is uncrowned. Both the Navy and Army Zeppelin badges could be termed "horizontal" rather than "vertical" badges. It features a zeppelin centered within a wreath, thus the need for a horizontal format. AUTHENTIC Zeppelin badges could be termed "horizontal" rather than "vertical" badges. It features a zeppelin centered within a wreath, thus the need for a horizontal format. On the reverse, we see a fine swollen pin. A hook at the crown’s top would allow the badge to be slipped through sewn-on tunic loops for better stability. This badge is in first-rate condition. You could not ask for any better to add to any collection. AUTHENTIC Zeppelin badges are greatly prized by collectors, and are often difficult-to-find. This badge came to me from an advanced collector. The badge has mark and is in XF+ condition. Detlev Niemann in "Price Guide. Orders and decorations Germany" 2004, page 162 put 1500 EURO for that nice badge. According Detlev Niemann (page 39) the box itself with maker mark "C.E. Juncker" cost 400 EURO, other maker marks cost 250 EURO. Total catalogue price for this item is 1900 EURO ($2300). Now Rittmeister Militaria - the famous internet-shop - is selling the same item for $2750 (item #11-367). The winner will receive that link. |
